Bedside Lamps: What Light Belongs in the Bedroom?

Warmes Licht einer Lunatre Nachttischlampe aus italienischer Keramik

No light accompanies us more intimately than the bedside lamp: the last at night, the first in the morning. Yet it is often the last thing bought – and the least thought through. This guide shows what really matters when choosing bedside lamps for the bedroom.

The Right Height: The 60-Centimetre Rule

The lower edge of the lampshade should sit roughly at shoulder height when you sit upright in bed – for most beds that means 50–65 cm above the nightstand surface, measured from the lamp base, which usually corresponds to a lamp height of 40–55 cm. This way the light falls on the book, not in the eyes. If the lamp sits too low, it only illuminates the nightstand; too high, and it dazzles your partner.

Warm Light for Healthy Sleep

In the evening, cool white light signals to the body: it is daytime. For the bedroom, we therefore recommend a maximum of 2700 Kelvin, ideally 2200 K ("extra-warm white"). A fabric shade enhances this effect: it filters the light softly and creates that muted, calm atmosphere that makes falling asleep easier. With a dimmable bulb, the reading lamp becomes a gentle night light at the touch of a button.

Think in Pairs

Two identical bedside lamps frame the bed and instantly give the bedroom a calm, hotel-like order – even if only one side is used for reading. Our customers therefore usually order exclusive bedside lamps in pairs. Asymmetry works too, but takes courage: for instance, a sculptural Onde on one side, a stack of books on the other.

Material: Why Ceramic?

In the bedroom, calm matters – visually too. Handcrafted ceramic has a warm, matte presence that pairs beautifully with linen, wood and muted colours. Each of our ceramic lamps is hand-thrown and hand-painted in Italian workshops: the deep blue of the Nobile blu, the shimmering platinum of the Nobile platino, or the understated black of the Nobile Nero.
